Nitro oxide, česky oxid dusný ale většinou známý jako rajský plyn je jednoduchá sloučenina dvou atomů dusíku a jednoho kyslíku. Bezbarvý, nehořlavý plyn inhalovaný v malých dávkách podobných účinků jak tráva:-) (bacha na větší dávku-způsobuje smrt). Lahve jsou plněný technickým plynem, který je oproti lékařskému jen aromatizován aby byl cítit když uchází. Někdy je nazýván jako "NOS" což vzniklo ze zkratky společnosti Nitro Oxide Systems, kterou založili Mike Thermos a Dale Veznaian-dva závodníci kteří vytáhli roku 1978 NitroOxid na světlo a snažili se ukázat lidem, že to je efektní a bezpečný. je největším výrobcem rajského plynu používaného v autech. Vstřikování N2O do spalovacího prostoru za účelem zvýšení výkonu bylo objeveno v Německém leteckém průmyslu za II. světové války. Německý letadla používala tzv. systém "GM-1", který přidával N2O do sacího potrubí aby se kompenzovala menší hustota vzduchu ve vyšších výškách a tím i menší množství "vzdušného" kyslíku. Později to používala i anglický letectvo. Amíci se toho jaxi báli a moc neexperimentovali.
V 50. letech v USA kdy začali být v oblibě automobilový závody začali načerno někteří jezdci používat tuto "energickou bombu", ale brzy na to přišla NASCAR a postavila N2O mimo zákon. Koncem 70. a začátkem 80. let začalo N2O pronikat do závodů dragsterů. V dnešní době je N2O jakožto i ostrý vačky, větší karburátory, větší kompresní poměr a laděný sací potrubí cestou k efektivnímu zvyšování výkonu.
Jak to funguje...
Vlastností N2O je rozpad při 296°C na kyslík a dusík. Vstříknutím do spalovacího prostoru při kompresním zdvihu tak vznikne hodně bohatá směs na kyslík. Teď je možná na místě otázka proč by nestačilo jen foukat kyslík do sání? Dusík tu má další důležitou funkci. Při expanzi se prudce ochladí čím stoupne účinnost spalovacího procesu poněvadž se ochladí vzduch do motoru o 15-30°C (pokles o 4°C=1%výkonu). Efektivní hoření směsi probíhá jen při lambdě blízké 1. Lambda je stechiometrický součinitel přebytku vzduchu. Hmotnostně na 1 díl benzínu padne 14,8 dílů vzduchu. Zajímavý číslo vyjde když na spotřebu 5 litrů benzínu prolítne filtrem 43000 litrů vzduchu. Pokud máme moc benzínu tak nemůže všechen shořet protože nemá kyslík a pokud máme moc kyslíku tak zase nemá s čím hořet. Proto je snaha dopravit při sacím zdvihu do válce maximum směsi schopné vydat energii. N2O má 36% hmotnostní podíl kyslíku přičemž vzduch jen 23%. V metru krychlovým je v N2O 2,3× víc kyslíku než ve stejným objemovým množství vzduchu. N2O je něco jako obdoba turba v tom smyslu, že u turba nám jde o to dopravit do válce větší množství směsi. Samozřejmě při výrazným zvýšení tlaku ve válci zvýší se taky možnost k detonacím. Z toho důvodu se musí při používání N2O změnit časování zápalu. N2O může přinést problémy s těsněním hlavy popř. zničením kroužků nebo pístů. Stejné důvody ke zničení mohou ale přinést i silný turbo, nízkooktanový benzín vysoký kompresní poměr nebo příliš chudá směs. Dalším věcí je správný poměr v dodávce N2O s palivem. Pokud jen přivedete do spalovacího prostoru dávku N2O bez extra dávky benzínu máte příliš chudou směs a to pak vede k možným detonacím bez efektu zvýšení výkonu. Spalovací teplota prudce stoupne. V opačném případě kdy je ve válci nadbytek paliva výkon prudce klesne a motor je chladnější poněvadž hodně tepla spotřebuje palivu při přechodu z kapalné fáze na plynou a není dostatek tepla při spalování.
Je teda jasný, že i použití N2O musí být uvážený a není to jen o tom, připojit nádobku s nitrákem k airboxu a v libovolnou chvíli si jen otevřít kohout. Použití "NOSu" přidá zhruba 25-35% což je třeba u 140 koňový GSX-R 190 koní. Na tento nárůst samozřejmě je potřeba použít kovaný písty, lepší ojnice a ložiska na kliku atd. Tento "booster" se však dá použít jen krátkodobě na několik vteřin jinak se motor rozletí po celým okolí. (např.film Rychle a zběsile:-)

V podstatě se dá říci, že základem je tlaková láhev s plynem, tlakové potrubí solenoidy a vstřikovač. V Česku se ve většině případů používá tzv. mokrý systém, při kterém se vstřikuje plyn i palivo naráz, a to do sacího systému před klapku. V zámoří však existuje i tzv. suché provedení, kdy se plyn vstřikuje ještě před čidlo snímající množství nasávaného vzduchu a řídicí jednotka pak poručí větší dávku benzinu.
Hrozí však, že se do válce omylem dostane příliš chudá směs a propálí se písty. Proto se v našich podmínkách používají pouze mokré systémy. Tlaková nádoba bývá umístěna v zavazadlovém prostoru, nebo na zadní sedačce a plyn se napouští do systému otevřením ventilu na lahvi jen v případě že se jej chystáte použít. Jinak není systém pod tlakem. Podobné je to s "oživením" ovládacích solenoidů. Proti závodům dragsterů se používá maličko jiný způsob aktivace samotného vstřikování plynu do systému. První podmínkou je již zmiňované zapojení ovládacích solenoidů, druhá zůstává stejná jako u dragsterů, tedy plné otevření klapek a třetí podmínkou je stisknutí dalšího spínače, který bývá umístěn na volantu. Třetí podmínka má zabránit samovolnému spuštění při každém plném sešlápnutí pedálu plynu. V případě zařazeného prvního rychlostního stupně se totiž začnou protáčet hnaná kola a využití výkonu není efektivní.
Plnění láhve...
Podle zkušeností majitelů se osvědčilo dát ji alespoň na tři hodiny do ledničky. Pak si můžete speciálně vytvořenou přepouštěcí hadicí (tak za 4000 Kč) naplnit vaši malou bombu. Pokud ji nezchladíte, nevejde se vám do ní ani polovina zkapalněného plynu. Nikdy ale nesmíte překročit jinou než uváděnou maximální povolenou váhu náplně! Kdyby se plyn ohřál na okolní teplotu, mohl by vám v lepším případě jen roztrhat auto. Dalším minusem NOS systémů je, že nejsou homologovány. A taky jde o životnost motoru. Když to však nebudete přehánět a budete Nitro používat jen pro zábavu, nic se neděje. Fakt je, že pokud byste se rozhodli vyměnit některé díly za odolnější (sportovní), pak neprohloupíte.
